Context
NEO is a module within CargoWise, WiseTech Global's flagship logistics execution platform used by freight forwarders, third-party logistics providers, and transport operators worldwide. The NEO Land Transport module specifically handles domestic and regional freight consignment management, tracking shipments from pickup through delivery across land-based transport networks. This project covered a redesign of the module's operational surface: a two-tab dashboard, a Consignment Listing screen with dynamic filtering, a Consignment Detail screen with structured sections, and the supporting UI components that hold them together.
Before the redesign, NEO Land Transport worked primarily as a detailed roster of individual consignments. It recorded what existed, but did little to help an operations manager read the health of the system or act on it. The redesign set out to turn that roster into a workspace that surfaces performance, risk, and next actions rather than just listing rows.
The problem
The existing NEO Land Transport interface was a list-based system that functioned primarily as a detailed roster of individual consignments. When a shipment was expanded, it displayed addresses and a basic tracking timeline. Beyond that, it was missing the operational layer that managers needed to run the network.
It critically lacked KPI visibility, with no at-a-glance performance metrics such as On-Time Pickup or On-Time Delivery. It lacked operational insight, with no data visualizations, charts, or trend indicators. It had no real-time alerting to surface consignments that needed urgent attention, such as late pickups, exceptions, or held shipments. It offered no structured way to analyze delays, no zone-based view to compare regional performance, and no quick-view of the latest system activity.
Together these gaps made it hard for operations managers to monitor system health, identify bottlenecks, and respond quickly to issues, which led to inefficient workflows and reduced situational awareness. Two constraints shaped the whole approach. First, the solution had to work with datasets already available inside NEO Land Transport, with no new data sources introduced. Second, it had to repurpose existing CargoWise Supply Design System components rather than build from scratch, so the result stayed scalable and consistent with the wider platform.
What I did
The redesign transformed the list-heavy interface into an insight-driven operational workspace spread across three interconnected screens: a two-tab dashboard, a consignment listing, and a consignment detail view. Rather than add isolated widgets, every element was chosen to answer a specific operational question a manager would ask, and layered so that summary views on the dashboard connect down into full listings and individual consignments.
The result reads as one system rather than a set of separate reports, and each screen has a clear job: the dashboard tells you what needs attention, the listing lets you filter and act on it, and the detail screen holds everything about a single shipment.
The dashboard's Consignment Overview tab leads with KPI cards for On-Time Pickup, On-Time Delivery, and Total Active Consignments, backed by a volume overview covering packages, pallets, volume, and weight moved. A pie chart shows the real-time distribution of consignments by current status, a tabbed Consignments Requiring Attention surface separates Late for Pickup, Late for Delivery, and Exception or Held shipments, and a Consignments by Status and Schedule view groups work into Today, Tomorrow, In Progress, and Last 7 Days. The dashboard's Regional Performance and Activity tab adds a performance-by-zone table breaking down pickup and delivery zones by On-Time Pickup and On-Time Delivery percentages, alongside a filterable, sortable recent activity table.
The Consignment Listing screen carries dynamic filter tiles for All, Late for Pickup, Late for Delivery, Exception or Held, Today, and Tomorrow, a More Menu with smart tile replacement behavior that keeps the interface space-efficient across many filter states, and a consignment summary drawer for quick inspection without full navigation. The Consignment Detail screen organizes everything about a single shipment into structured sections for Booking Details, Package Metrics, Tracking with a map visualization and milestone timeline, and Pickup and Delivery information, with status shown prominently in the page header and a comprehensive tracking history down to micro-tracking detail.
Outcomes
- Transformed a list-heavy consignment roster into an insight-driven operational workspace spanning a two-tab dashboard, a dynamically filtered listing, and a structured detail screen
- Introduced KPI visibility (On-Time Pickup, On-Time Delivery, Total Active Consignments) and volume metrics where the legacy interface had no at-a-glance performance read at all
- Added structured data visualization and a Consignments Requiring Attention surface that separates Late for Pickup, Late for Delivery, and Exception or Held work, enabling proactive issue resolution
- Established regional accountability through a zone-based performance table comparing pickup and delivery zones on On-Time Pickup and On-Time Delivery
- Designed a space-efficient dynamic filtering pattern and a summary drawer that make high-volume consignment lists faster to scan and act on
- Delivered the full redesign by reusing existing CargoWise Supply Design System components and existing datasets, keeping it consistent, scalable, and buildable as an early-stage step toward WiseTech's longer-term goals for logistics intelligence
What I learned
Constraints sharpened the design rather than limiting it. Being restricted to existing datasets and existing components could have felt like a ceiling, but it forced a data-first discipline where every widget had to justify its existence against real data and a real operational need. The result was a dashboard with no decorative surfaces, which is exactly what an operations tool should be.
Turning a roster into a workspace is mostly about hierarchy, not new data. The old interface already held most of what managers needed; what it lacked was a structure that surfaced performance, risk, and next actions in the right order. Progressive disclosure from dashboard to listing to detail, plus a dedicated attention surface, did more for situational awareness than any single new metric, because it changed how the same underlying data was read and acted on.
