The proposition

TRIO puts a user's money into three buckets, stocks, cash, and bonds, and lets them spend from the same balance, so investing happens continuously rather than as a separate act. The onboarding line states the access promise directly: investments in stocks, bonds, and cash available twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. A small starting incentive, five dollars to begin investing, is used to lower the barrier to first deposit.

Design direction

Bright and optimistic, built on a green brand with a triangular mark that encodes the three-bucket idea into the identity itself. Illustration is soft and rounded, with a friendly character-led onboarding scene rather than financial imagery. The signed-in screens are personalised by name and lead with a single large balance figure, keeping the emotional centre on the number the user cares about.

The most substantial part of this direction is a sustained exploration of how to visualise a three-way allocation. The same balance is drawn several different ways across the home-screen variants: a donut with a centred balance, a three-dimensional stacked pyramid, a segmented bar chart with percentage labels, and a colour-inverted full-green treatment. Each keeps the same stocks, cash, and bonds split while testing how much weight to give the chart against the balance figure.

What was designed

  • Splash carrying the triangular mark on a full green field
  • Onboarding and login with the access proposition, character illustration, and paired login and sign-up actions
  • Home screen variants (four) exploring allocation visualisation: donut with centred balance, stacked pyramid, segmented percentage bars, and an inverted full-colour treatment
  • Allocation labels showing the stocks, cash, and bonds split as tagged percentages beneath each chart
  • Deposit funds as the single primary action, paired with the starting-incentive message
  • Latest transactions list with merchant name, time, and amount
  • Bottom navigation across profile, home, and card or spend surfaces

What it demonstrates

A focused look at one hard visualisation problem explored in parallel: four genuine attempts at making a three-part portfolio legible at a glance, rather than one idea with cosmetic variations. Useful as evidence of iterative visual problem-solving, and as the origin point of the Finch product, showing how an early direction survives into a shipped design.
